Monsaraz is an extraordinary “bastide” of the late middle ages, part of the long lines of defense of one of the most stable border lines of the oldest countries in Europe. Integrating a region of mixed and shared culture which today unites what the old nationalisms separated. Monsaraz, almost abandoned by modernity – on XIX century, liberalism and privatization of the lands of the king/church and the arrival of the railway in the region caused the birth of a new city, Reguendos de Monsaraz, in the plain, where the inhabitants moved. The almost abandoned fortification was in ruin and was almost entirely acquired, in the middle of the 20th century, by a powerful banker, lover of the arts and heritage – who founded the oldest school of restoration of Portuguese movable heritage, still in activity (Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation) – to restore it philologically and offer it for the enjoyment of its guests, from the world. The powerful General Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments DGEMN from the dictatorial times developed successive restorations of the medieval parts of Monsaraz in the logic of stylistic restoration (Viollet le Duc). The most significant restoration work carried out was, in fact, the renewal of walled walls and the pavement with traditional stone. Began in the mid-1950s, those works take place practically uninterruptedly for another 25 years. The return of democracy in the mid-70s allowed the return of this city to public domain and appreciation, and since then a vast process of rehabilitation and requalification of that territory began. The creation of the near Alqueva dam – one of the largest in Europe – opened up new possibilities for the agricultural world and the region has stood out as an ecological and cultural destination, now offering remarkable living conditions with enormous attractiveness. This project began with the need to repair and consolidate the medieval perimeter to the west and south. In the course of this process, was discovered that the restorations of the 1950s had left hidden the previous defense system – Barbacan – and the routes that connected it to the parts of a modern fortification (Vauban system). With the same budget originally planned, it was possible to reformulate the first intentions, which allowed the reopening of the Barbacã route, connecting it to another interior route (Portas Évora, Casa Inquisition, Castle) by reopening hidden doors. The process of conservation and restoration was careful, seeking to clarify the legibility of what is authentic and what is contemporary (in detail),integrating the new interventions in the history of material culture and for this reason ancestral materials and technologies were used seeking the most natural integration (but you can recognize what is new in detail). The infrastructure, drainage and public lighting needs were resolved. The lighting of the fortress was revised: was using excessive and unacceptable solutions (excessive power and a quality of light that resulted in light pollution). Associated with the right to the night (Monsaraz joined the Sark Skyes initiative) the new lighting project ensured light quality (2400kelvin) with no light pollution and minimum consumption. Accepting the long time of this place, the project allows a journey through the different strata of human occupation and the palimpsest that the city and the fortifications constitute (previously impossible to understand and visit). The 20th century restorations always focused on the medieval set within the walls, however an extraordinary landscape surrounds Monsaraz and this project allows the interconnection with systems of routes through this cultural landscape and a better perception/understanding of the border territory – said to “Raia” - between Spain and Portugal, for a long time subject to abandonment. Projects like these help to bridge what borders once separated, in rural territories far from the big metropolis, but truly authentic and genuine, today rare and that urgently need to be safeguarded In the mid-19th century, the church privatization assets and a liberal process of ceding the king's lands, acquired by large landowners, took place. The inhabitants of Monsaraz lost the possibility to lease lands, hunger and unemployment followed. In the beginning of 20th century the train arrived but not the village: Monsaraz was almost deserted, a prosperous new city in the prairie appeared: Regengos de Monsaraz. In 1946 classification as National Monument. In the 50-60´s and until 1974 (democratic revolution) a banker (heritage lover) bought 75% of the buildings to make a private restoration. Monsaraz was one of the first urban heritage fortified villages to be preserve in Portugal. The redefinition of the Barbican path along the curtained escarpment seeks to stabilize its old route and restore the continuity of transition between the territory, the extraordinary cultural landscape to the west and the walled town of Monsaraz. The restoration of this route in traditional schist paving, allows to consolidate the transition between the vertical plane of the wall, in apparent schist masonry, and the horizontal plane defined by the path and the rocky escarpment where the village of Monsaraz is located. The schist pavements of Monsaraz are one of its hallmarks and also represent a complex system for the conduction of rainwater, based on the structure of guides that draw the water's path. All the specific interventions now proposed for the floors of Monsaraz seek to continue this system, optimizing the flow of water to the outside of the walls. As is the case with the Restoration of the wall section of the roundabout. At the end of the important drainage channel of Travessa Quebra-Costas, it is proposed to give architectural expression to the existing gargoyle, which seems to be insufficient for the flow that this artery supports, transforming it into a piece of granite, integrated into the wall, which projects the rainwater to another lower gargoyle, which collects the water at the level of the Barbacan path (a significant part of the population between this area and the festoon line drains to this point) and leads it to a natural flow downstream. This piece gives expression to a critical point of the Monsaraz drainage, formalizing an element that is also exceptional. The objective is to ensure that the rainwater runoff is optimally conducted to the outside of the walls, without causing erosion of the paths and walls of the wall. The occasional use of corten steel elements, as external material, is used only in situations of transition between Barbacã and the outside of the wall, characterized by the vertical elements that define the lighting and by the external staircase to the wall and connecting the Porta da Traição to the Revelins that add to the topography. The main gates of the village of Monsaraz, marked by cylindrical turrets, are also the strategic points of access to the top of the curtain wall.&nbsp; These points are normally defined by adjoining firing stairs built directly into the thickness of the schist masonry of the wall, as is the case at the other gates of the town. At the Porta de Évora, this staircase was partially destroyed, and some remaining steps can still be identified, as well as the perimeter of its location and morphology. In conjunction with the structural consolidation work of the walls of Monsaraz and in particular the interior of the opening of the wall next to the Porta de Évora, the reconstruction and consolidation of this staircase in schist masonry was carried out, guaranteeing the restoration of its previous shape in an essential and simplified design.&nbsp; Once again the regularity of the equipment to be executed and the use of air lime-based mortar will allow this addition to be documented and distinguished from the original parts. The main construction material for the walls and castle of Monsaraz is the schist of the region, however, granite is used in exceptional construction situations, such as in Porta do pátio da Casa da Inquisição. the foundations were visible - of many of the buildings and interior architectures, such as a chapel , which we now know were faithfully sketched by Duarte De Armas in his Livro das Fortalezas (folio122 verso). The excavations at the Porta de Armas allowed the full exposure of the doorway to be exposed, revealing the original threshold and designing a new staircase with access from inside the Castle. The solution seeks to completely free the door arch, replacing the original threshold, defining a level that allows us to understand the pre-existence of the old “porch” in the square of arms and referring the new access stairs to the level of the current arena to a plan further back, with a deployment very close to the original. This allows a full reading of the stonework of the door arch and a better understanding of the previous spatialities, allowing the perception of the original solution of the staircase leading to the Plaza de Armas. The materialization of this new staircase solution is made with granite masonry, the same materiality as all the Portas do Castelo, with the settlement levels always above the pre-existing remains, without interference with the original archaeological remains and structures, allowing easy dismantling. future if the reversibility of this new construction is intended. <img width="2669" 2022 10:03:27 +0000 Conservation of Monsaraz Fortifications https://monsarazfortifications.cargo.site/Porta-da-Traicao Porta da "Traição" At the southwest top of Barbacan there is a False Door that was made in stone masonry, most likely in the modern phase of fortification. This material was introduced in the Mediterranean morphology of the barbican: it is distinctive of the first fortification so it easily incorporates the door frame and it is totally different from the way of laying the different masonry infill. The new access stairs to the bastion landing is the result of the occasional dismantling of the masonry covering the frame of the span, thus widening the settlement of the initial landing and configuration of a staircase with a new design and new materiality (granite and corten steel), allowing to distinguish between what is new and what is authentic and integral, meaning an harmony in integration, but totally reversible. This intervention opens a new perspective on the landscape, the territory while also getting a new view of the place and the castle itself. <img width="4527" height="3667" width_o="4527"
